You've got to read this book!

I read a lot about play (all its aspects) because I want to absorb as much as possible. I just finished reading “Playful” by Cas Holman, a toy creator, play designer, and author, and it is at the top of my list. When a book makes me feel something, like really feel something, my first instinct is to share it, cause why not. I almost posted a “You've got to read this book” after chapter one. But instead, I held off on that first impulse and let it sink in.

Cas’s story is inspiring, yes. But more than that, this book nudges you to be a better person; well, it did for me. I am not great at posting on LinkedIn because I don't want to be noise (Which I have posted for the sake of posting many, many times, I am aware, sorry). Sharing Cas’s book doesn’t feel like noise. It feels important. It feels like words that need to be heard, especially right now.
Building a business about play isn’t always playful. It’s still a business. There are plenty of things that aren’t fun. This book reminded me why I’m doing this: making play in the workplace normal. Not an event. Not an after-hours extra. A way of working.
Do the work from a play perspective. Let people approach tasks the way they actually enjoy. There isn’t one “right” way to do something. Yes, there may be processes and guidelines to follow to protect people's safety, but when we are free to work the way we “play”, the work gets easier, more creative, and, yes, even better for the company and its culture.
Thank you, Cas, for the push I needed. We need more people like you in this world.
