Okay, serious question here – what actually counts as “assault” when you’re living with the person? Like last weekend my girlfriend and I got into this massive screaming match, she threw a coffee mug at the wall right beside my head (it shattered everywhere), then shoved me pretty hard in the chest a couple times while I was trying to leave the room. I never hit her back or anything, but I’m wondering if that technically counts as assault even though we’re together and it was just a bad fight? I feel weird even thinking about the legal side, but it’s been on my mind.

Man, that sounds intense. I went through something similar a few years ago with an ex – she grabbed my arm hard enough to leave bruises and slapped me once when I was walking away. I thought it was just a fight until the neighbors called the cops. Turns out even pushing, grabbing, or throwing stuff that could hurt you can absolutely fall under domestic assault charges. The cops told me it doesn’t matter if you’re married, dating, or just roommates – if someone’s scared or gets hurt during an argument, the law treats it seriously. Ended up being a huge headache even though neither of us wanted charges pressed at first. Crazy how fast “normal couple fighting” can turn into something legal.
